Latvian Families Across Generations 2018: Analytical Report

Since the early 2000s, several studies in Latvia have explored family-related issues, analysing topics such as cohabitation experiences, relationship status and satisfaction, the division of household responsibilities, single-parent families, divorce, the role of children in family life and child-rearing, the legal regulation of cohabitation and partnerships, and public opinions and attitudes towards unregistered cohabitation and marriage.

However, until 2018 there had been no in-depth quantitative research focusing on the dynamics of demographic processes, differences in the timing and sequencing of life events—including family formation and family life cycles across generations. This gap was addressed in 2018 when the Cross-Sectoral Coordination Centre (PKC) and the University of Latvia (UL) took a significant step towards expanding knowledge about Latvian families and intergenerational relationships by joining the international programme “Generations and Gender Programme” (GGP).

The experimental study “Latvian Families Across Generations”, with its findings published in the report “Latvian Families Across Generations 2018: Analytical Report”, was part of the GGP. It was implemented in Latvia as a pilot project, fully adhering to the GGP’s requirements and methodology.
