The study “Latvian Families Across Generations” is implemented within the framework of the Generations and Gender Programme (GGP) by the State Chancellery as part of the ESF Plus co-financed project No. 4.3.6.9/2/24/I/001. Data collection and analysis are carried out by researchers and demography experts from the University of Latvia. The aim of the study is to help understand what influences modern family life, the formation and planning of new families, as well as the relationships between generations and the division of roles within families.

Both the University of Latvia and the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI), as the coordinator of the international Generations and Gender Programme, guarantee that your data will be processed in accordance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Your answers will never be linked to your name or contact details. The data will be used solely for research purposes and will be accessible only to approved researchers. Results will be presented only in statistical form (for example, as averages, percentages, or correlations). Individual responses will never be published.

Additional information about how the data collected in the study are stored and how confidentiality is ensured, as well as about your rights as a respondent, is available here: Participant Information Sheet (PDF, in Latvian)

In Latvia, the University of Latvia is responsible for the study. It is part of a large scientific project involving over 20 research institutions from different countries.

The questions concern important events in the life of every person – such as completing education, changing place of residence, entering into a relationship or the birth of children. Please provide the dates of these events to better understand how people live in Latvia. We also ask about relationships with loved ones, health, well-being, living and working conditions. We are also interested in your opinions on family, the role of women and men in society and concerns about the future. Many participants find the study interesting and thought-provoking. However, if a question is too personal for you, you can skip it. You can also withdraw from the study at any time.

Yes, the survey is fully compatible with mobile devices. You can complete it on a computer, tablet, or mobile phone.

Yes, your personal data (name, surname, contact details) are well protected. We store them properly secured - in accordance with the regulations on personal data protection. They will be deleted after the completion of the study "GGS". Your answers in the survey will be analyzed anonymously, solely for research purposes. Importantly, they will never be linked to your name, surname or address.

It usually takes about 45 minutes. For some people it takes a little less, for others a little longer - it depends on age and life situation.

No, you don’t have to complete the survey in one sitting. You can pause at any time and return to it later. All your responses will be saved, and when you log in again, you’ll be able to continue from where you left off. You can do this on any day and at any time - hovewer, it’s important to complete the survey by the deadline indicated in your invitation letter.

No, participation in the study is completely voluntary – you can refuse without giving a reason. However, the results of the study will only be valuable if enough people agree to take part. Each invited person represents a certain group of people in Latvia – of similar age, the same sex and from a similar place of residence. If many people refuse, it is as if the voices of some groups did not appear at all. That is why your participation is so important to us.

Respondents who complete the entire questionnaire will receive a €12 gift card by mail to their home address. The gift card can be used in one of the major grocery and household goods store chains in Latvia.

Scientists from all over the world use the study – based on the answers of the respondents, scientific articles, books, reports, etc. are created. Thanks to your answers, we will better understand how the lives of people in Poland are changing. This information can also help decision-makers – for example in the government – to better adapt their actions to the needs of society.

Here you can read the results of the previous study.

The current edition of the study involves over 20 countries – mainly from Europe, including Latvia. The first edition of the study, completed in 2015, involved 19 countries, including Latvia.

This means we will be returning to the same people more than once. Some questions will be repeated – so we can see what changes in the lives of the study participants over time. If you take part in the study now (at the turn of 2025/2026), we would like to contact you twice more in the next three years and invite you to participate again. We may also ask you to take part in subsequent rounds of the study in the future – of course, only with your consent!
